Apple IPhone 5 Versus Apple IPhone 4S – What Has Changed?

January 6, 2013

The Apple iPhone 5 first appeared on September 21, 2012 to the public, about one year from the release of its iPhone 4S. Apple is taking the smartphone market by storm with its new upgrades and ever improving models; but what really has changed in the newest iPhone 5 smartphone? Here’s the story.

Change in Processor

The iPhone 4S’s dual-core Apple A5 processor was upgraded to the Apple A6 in the iPhone 5. What this means is faster downloading of applications, files, internet browsing, and video streaming. You’ll also get faster downloads and web browsing thanks to the new 4G LTE network connection (but this is only available through certain networks in specific locations).

Enhanced Display

The iPhone 5 comes with a larger display area than its predecessor. The iPhone 5 has approx. a 0.5 inch bigger display screen at 4 inches, versus the 3.5 inch display of the iPhone 4S. The iPhone 5 also has a larger dimension at 123.8 x 586 x 7.6 mm compared to the iPhone 4S at a dimension of 115.2 x 58.6 x 9.3 mm.

Facetime Feature

Although both the iPhone 5 and iPhone 4S have Facetime capabilities, the iPhone 5 is able to use both WiFi and cell connection for Facetime. Currently, the iPhone 4S can only use WiFi for Facetime.

Battery Capacity

There is more standby battery time with the iPhone 5 at 225 hours in one full charge. The iPhone 4 has 220 hours of standby time when fully charged. Also, the iPhone 5 has eight hours of talk and internet browsing time when using the 3G networking system. The iPhone 4S has just over seven hours of talk time, and somewhat less with Internet browsing.

The iPhone 5 is lighter than the iPhone 4S at only 112 grams or 3.9 ounces. The weight of the iPhone 4S is 140 grams.

The iPhone 5 is the slimmest and lightest phone from Apple. It also comes in two new design colors of black and slate, and white and silver. The iPhone 4S is available in only the basic black and white colors that was also introduced with the iPhone 4.

The iPhone 4S has the VGA front-facing camera that is less than one megapixel, with an eight megapixel rear-facing camera that includes an LED flash. The iPhone 5 was developed for faster viewing of pictures, as well as the ability to take pictures in the panoramic style. Also, you have the ability to take pictures at the same time you are taking a video.

The iPhone 5 video feature also includes a better stabilization of video making for higher quality videos. What hasn’t changed is that the camera has eight megapixels.

The iPhone 5 comes with the smallest charger called the “Lightening” charger. It has a smaller port with an eight pin connector. The iPhone 4S and older models of the iPhone have a 30 pin connector.

The iPhone 5 also comes with Apple’s new Earpods, the latest version of their white earphones. This is a $29.99 value at no extra charge when purchasing the iPhone 5.
