Description Of Absinthe Proof

January 27, 2010

The legalization of Absinthe in the USA and other countries has made it famous once again in the world. Lots of young people are trying it for the first time and knocking it back without giving attention on it’s alcohol content. Understanding Absinthe proof?

Absinthe is an anise flavored liquor which is made from distilling alcohol with a blend of herbs including wormwood (artemisia absinthium), aniseed and fennel. The characteristic emerald green coloring of classic verte styles of Absinthe gave it the name of the Green Fairy, La Fee Verte.

According to the Ritual Absinthe is generally drunk diluted with iced water. When water is dripped over a sugar lump on a slotted spoon and into the Absinthe the louche effect is visible.

As Absinthe contained wormwood so it was restricted in the early 1900s. Dr Valentin Magnan tested worwmood on guinea pigs in 1845 and found that a guinea pig given wormwood oilhad convulsions, whereas, a guinea pig given alcohol just got drunk. The chemical thujone was found to be far more dangerous than ethanol (alcohol) from the tests done by Magnan. He and others in the medical profession believed thujone to be a psychoactive element. Absinthe was unauthorized because of this.

The activities of a thujone molecule and THC from the drug cannabis are same because their structures are similar.

There is no truths in all these claims. The higher dose of thujone can become active on the GABA receptors of the brain but thujone is different from THC. According to the experiments done on Absinthe the thujone content in it is so small that it cannot harm anybody. Due to intake of enough quantity of Absinthe one will die of alcohol poisoning before experiencing effects from thujone!

Although Absinthe will not cause us to hallucinate or convulse, it is a highly alcoholic drink which needs to be consumed with care because it will get you drunk quite quickly.
