Long Distance Moving Companies: Making Relocating Your Kids Simple
January 25, 2009
Are you and your family about to make a large relocation?
Lots of families these days have to pack up and move to where the greatest opportunities are for them, and relocating with children and teens in the family can be a challenge. Oftentimes, children are confused by the process of having to leave behind their friends and a house they love in order to travel to a totally new home. Don’t worry! There are many ways in which you can help make the change smooth and simple for them.
It is vital that you sit down as a family and tell your children about the plan to move as soon as possible. If they hear whispers and see unusual behavior, they will know that something is up, and they will probably become anxious and stressed out. It is better to just be completely up front and honest with your children right from the beginning.
Be sure to answer any questions they may have honestly. Also, it is a good idea to be ready with some fun or cool facts about the new town or house. For example, a teen may be excited to hear her new school has a swim team or the world’s largest mall.
Remember that your reaction will often set the feelings towards the relocation. If you are stressed out, your children will feel the effects of that stress. Consider hiring the services of moving companies to help in the packing and relocation of your things. There are plenty of long distance moving companies and interstate movers that will come to your house and take care of all the packing details so that you can spend more time together and with old friends before you move.
When you get to the new house, it is also a good idea to walkthe streets of your new neighborhood together and to take the children on a tour of your new town. The more familiar your children are with their new surroundings, the faster they will become comfortable there. Consider enrolling them in extracurricular clubs and activities as soon as possible so that they can meet new friends and start to accept their new community.
Moving with small children up through teenage children can be a real challenge, but as long as you are honest with them and make the relocation a family affair right from the beginning, you can make this relocation smoothly and with minimal stress and doubt.
