Don’t Forget Your Shooting Glasses When You Go Shooting
January 14, 2009
Thinking of hunting or shooting for the first time? Before you begin, you should know about the various types of eye protection available to you. Regular eyeglasses and contact lenses are simply not enough and don’t provide what is required to protect your eyes. Eye protection for your first hunting or shooting experience is important, not only for protecting your eyes against debris, but to protect them from the elements. With that said, here is what you should know about the types of shooting glasses and eye protection available to you.
For Women and Children
Women and children (as well as men) require a good sturdy pair of glasses that offer eye protection when they are considering taking up hunting or shooting for the first time. Carbon shooting glasses offer a variety of styles and sizes that are made to fit the smaller ‘face frames’ of both women and children – and they don’t have to be heavy either. Most hunting and shooting glasses that are designed for children and for women have either silver or a black frame and the amber colored lenses help protect the eyes from the glare of the sun ensuring that you have a clear look at your target.
When you are purchasing shooting glasses for a woman or a child, take into consideration whether they already wear glasses (or contact lenses). If they do wear them normally, you might want to consider a pair of prescription hunting/shooting glasses which will offer additional comfort.
Why Amber Lenses?
When you hunt or shoot, the glare from the sun may not give you a clear view of your target. Opt for an amber lens to remove glare for a better view of your target. And because amber lenses are usually carbon, they are very durable and will deflect debris which can cause lens damage. An amber lens is typically designed to help block out glare – the glare can make a difference to you when you’re hunting or shooting since it can distort your target. The amber lenses in hunting glasses are typically carbon – this also allows for protection from debris potentially damaging the lens.
Different from eyeglasses
Hunting and shooting lenses (or glasses) are designed to fit closely to the head and most are a ‘wrap-around’ style. This is to prevent debris from getting into your eye from any angle, whether it’s above your glasses, from the side or even from underneath the glasses.
Approved Lenses
The North American Hunting Club recommends the orange/amber eyeglasses. These help protect you from not only flying debris but also to make sure that you get a clear view of anything you’re shooting at, because they block out the rays of sun and light. The IntraSPX system is used on most hunting and shooting glasses. Another feature of hunting and shooting glasses is that they are usually fairly lightweight – combine that with the added feature of fitting snugly, you might even find you like them better than your everyday eyewear!
Summary
It’s very important whether you are a man, a woman or a child if you’re taking up hunting for sport or even target shooting that you take into consideration the protection of your eyes. You don’t want any accidents to occur that could impair your vision temporarily or permanently. Taking precautions and purchasing the right glasses when you get started can save you trouble further down the line.
