Desert Boots
February 5, 2009
Desert boots are popular for soldiers who work in the desert. They increased in popularity after Desert Storm. A company called Clarks even made an everyday version. Both styles are tan, one is more for work than the other, but both remain popular.
Desert boots are well adapted for use in the desert. First of all they’re high. People don’t realize how bad it can be to have sand in your shoe. It can ruin your feet. Soldiers tuck their pants into the boots to stop sand from getting inside the boot. Deserts get very cold at night, to the boots are also insulated. Insulation, believe it or not, is also useful to have when it’s hot.
There was a special kind of desert boot in the science fiction novel Dune. These boots, called still suit boots, were quite futuristic. Moisture was pumped through the still suit to keep a person cool. Pumps, which made this possible, were contained in the heel of the boot. The pumps get their power from the energy produced when a person walks. Too bad we can’t buy those now.
Lets get back to a discussion of those Clarks boots. These wouldn’t be appropriate for marching in the desert. In fact no working person would or could wear these on the job. They’re made for look and recreation, not for function. People who liked the book and jeans look in the 70s often purchase these boots. They sell well. Many people like the stylish look of these boots. Of course, they can pretend to be working.
Many soldiers would be amazed that the wading boots have become so popular. They thought about the long march that day. However, without knowing it, the soldiers made the desert boots popular.
So in a way it was soldiers who brought desert boots from the battlefield into the fashion world.
