No, you can’t use the optical jack on your tv…it’s probably an output, anyway.

Do you have a digital coaxial input on your receiver? You can use a optical-to-coax convertor if you do… Otherwise, you need a new receiver.

If you have a HDMI pass through, it will decode the sound and let you pass the video through to your TV. It doesn’t sound like your receiver has this, though. I don’t believe there is a way to downgrade your signal to a coaxial digital input, which would allow you to get surround. Also, it sounds like your receiver may not take coaxial digital inputs, either.

Honestly, if you dropped the $400 on a PS3 and have a receiver with surround, you may want to highly consider upgrading your receiver. You can get an Onkyo TX-SR605 that has HDMI pass through and optical inputs for $400 USD on Amazon. Then you can get the full surround experience, now and in the future, especially if all HD movies adapt the BluRay format.

If you decide not to do that, I think you’re just going to have to stick to good old RCA (right and left) audio output from your PS3. The sound quality won’t be good, but at least you’ll have sound.

No it won’t work that way, looks like you are SOL man. Time to upgrade to a newer receiver.
