Internet Rudeness
September 1, 2010
The Internet is full of places for people to express themselves in a multitude of ways. You can visit YouTube to showcase a talent through a shared video, post pictures in a multitude of places, visit a forum to post an opinion, or share private details on a blog.
It seems that the more opportunities that individuals have to share, the more some of these people are inclined to act in a less than appropriate way. They hide behind anonymity online and expose a rudeness that wouldn’t be accepted in a face to face exchange.
A common term you’ll run into online is “troll”. It’s Internet slang for someone who posts controversial or defamatory messages in hopes of inciting anger and emotion-driven responses. Causing others to become distressed is the primary goal of these individuals.
To date, no research has been undertaken to determine what makes individuals “troll”. Besides, if studies were conducted about this issue, how could you ascertain the accuracy of the data? You’re looking at a group of people trying to be lost in a sea of nameless faces.
People who utilize YouTube may experience different feeling than if they were simply adding a comment in a strictly text based venue. With YouTube, the user is more exposed to the public as they’re actually showing themselves on camera. A trolls rudeness is then targeted at the appearance of the user as well as whatever information is in the video. Trolls aren’t always mean and hurtful through comments. Some actually get posts concerning themselves in relation to nasty commentary.
These types of people are everywhere, and though we aren’t positive as to why they do it, it may be because they are just venting. People often think that the Internet is a giant playground for them where they can shroud them self in secrecy and no one will know who or where they are. You can end up getting hurt if this is how you view the Internet.
You may think that your identity is safe and secret but there are programs made to find out who you are. Plugging in an IP address and bringing up it’s location on a map, is the specialty of websites like fast-ip-search.com/238/index.htm. All it takes is a single sequence of numbers and one mouse click, and all of a sudden your location pops up on a map. You never know who you encounter online and what kind of mental state they’re in. Who knows what will cause them to have a mental breakdown.
Your best response to a troll’s comments is to locate a representative of the website to report them to. Websites, on the whole, are anxious to put an end to these destructive postings and will take steps to remove them, and disable their accounts. rudeness doesn’t need to become an online norm. A good rule is that if you wouldn’t say it to a person’s face, you shouldn’t be posting it online.
