Is it legal to receive satellite TV service without a plan/provider?

I remember reading a few years ago that it was legal to receive satellite TV without a plan or provider if you built the equipment (dish, reciever, etc) yourself, because the signal is out there, available to anyone, just like a radio signal. Is this still true?

I believe its legal if you are receiving free to air channels.
At one point it was stated that “Anything provided over the air is free” such as radio. What you are being charged for on Satelite services, is your dish’s access to the network, but the satelite signal is there anyway, so if you have your own reciever, then you can legally get the signal all you want.
Is legal to receive the free to air, what is ilegal is to hack the FTA box to receive Dish Network or Bev…
lyngsat.com will give you info as to what is available for free…
good luck with that viewsat
I don’t think it’s legal if you try to receive satellite tv without subscriptions, if you’re using TV.
Have you heard about computer software that can watch every tv stations? Well, there is, and it’s legal. I’m using satellite tv software from. You can watch more than 4000 TV Stations online and without anymore subscriptions. And it’s legal of course.
