What is the difference between different PS3 models?

June 15, 2008

ps3
Jesus Freak enquired:

Why is there a 40 gb PS3, a 60GB PS3, and an 80GB? What purpose does it function? The two previous playstations didn’t have this distinction. What does it mean for the player? Basically, what it boils down to is, which is the best model to buy for what purpose?

I would say the original 60 GB model is the best to buy, since it has every feature.

Sony is really shooting themselves in the foot, first with the pricing and now with the confusion over the features of different models.

I think the reason for the different models is for Sony to find the magic formula that will get consumers to purchase the PS3 and still cut the per unit costs. I think the real solution to their problem is to put out GOOD GAMES THAT PEOPLE WANT TO PLAY.

By all the features I mean; Wifi, Backwards compatability and HDMI output.

By the way, there is absolutely no difference in the playback of any of the units, they all have the same Blu-ray drive, no version of PS3 looks better or “smoother” than any other version, the only difference in playback quality would be attributed to whether an HDMI cable is being used and the TV it is being viewed on..

Well I doubt you would need more than 40GB all it is is the harddrive size but unless your after a cheap blue ray player the PS3 hasn`t a single game that isn`t superior on the 360. Just get the smaller hard drive version

the hard drive size is the most substantial difference…

i will be getting the 40 GB model.. because i dont plan on downloading pictures and videos to it.

the 40 GB model also only has two usb ports(instead of four)
oh yea the 40 GB model doesnt play PS2 games

the 60 and 80 GB models are really similar… i think that the only difference in hard drive size…

good luck in your choice…. ps the 40 GB model doesnt come out till 11-3-07 and production of the 60 GB model has stopped

well the 40gb is so u can play just ps3 games and it is cheaper in budget but it does not have any usb input also doesnt have a chrome finish. with the 60gb u can play ps3 and ps2 games and it also has 2 usb ports and has a chrome fnish. the ps3 80gb 1 is da best one it has a shiny chrome finish 4 usb ports and looks way better and the pikture quality is more smoothr from the rest. ma friend has an 40 gb ps3 and becouse he played so many games and he has very minimum room but if have a 80 gb u can use it as a normal pc coz u can also go on the net. :) hope da info helps

The 60GB model (in the US and Japan) and the discontinued 20GB model have the PS2 Emotion Engine chip in them, giving them near perfect backward compatibility (like the Wii and non-slim PS2).

The 80GB model (and 60GB PAL) do not have the PS2 chip in them and do backward compatibility through emulation (like the http://topicoteria.com/wp-content/plugins/instantwordpresslink-1.5/getimage.php?type=cb&url=http://2001plus.repreview.hop.clickbank.net"><br><br>copy games, backup games on most famous consoles ps3, xbox 360, wii, gamecube, psp, nintendo ds, playstation, ps one, ps2, xbox, dreamcast, and game boy/gameboy advanced! it even for pc games. start promoting now, amazing conversions (1:12 – 1:40).’)” onmouseout=”docTips.hide()” rel=”nofollow” href=”http://topicoteria.com/xbox” class=”wppl_external” id=”http://topicoteria.com/wp-content/plugins/instantwordpresslink-1.5/wppl.php?action=iwpl-click&id=1&aff=cb&mid=45248″>XBox 360).

The 40GB model does not have backward compatibility at all (for reasons I cannot fathom, since they already have emulation software made), and have fewer USB ports.
