Bulgaria Attractions to Visit During Your Trip
May 12, 2009
Located between Greece and Romania, Bulgaria is an often overlooked travel destination. This is a pity, though, since there is a wealth of beautiful and interesting Bulgaria attractions.
Valley of the Thracian Kings – The valley of Kazanluk, also known as the Rose Valley, is the site of impressive tombs and burial mounds, the most famous of which is the Kazanluk Tomb. Along with the lavishly decorated Sveshtari Tomb near the town of Isperih, the Kazanluk Tomb has been included in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites and is one of the most popular Bulgaria attractions.
Rila Monastery – Like the Kazanluk Tomb, the Rila Monastery is also a World Heritage Site. Built in the 10th century, the monastery is not just a spiritual centre, but also a striking architectural feat and a literary centre situated amidst the beautiful natural scenery of the Rila Mountain.
The Assumption Bochkava Monastery and the Rozhen Monastery are also Bulgaria attractions worth visiting. Both have spectacular iconostases, too, as well as other stunning artwork. In fact, the Assumption Bochkava Monastery has one of the oldest wood-carved iconostases in Bulgaria.
Church of Saint Sophia – The Church of Saint Sophia is the most popular of all the churches in Bulgaria. In fact, it is considered a national monument. Aside from its impressive architecture, it has a long and interesting history dating back to the 4th century, including being converted into a mosque in the 16th century and surviving earthquakes in the early 19th century.
Roman Ampitheatre – Located in the city of Plovdiv, the Roman ampitheatre is not just one of the most popular Bulgaria attractions, but also a stage for numerous musical, opera and ballet performances, including the annual Verdi Festival in June. While in Plovdiv, you can also visit various art galleries, such as the Atanas Krastev House and the Philipopolis Art Gallery.
Pirin National Park – If you want to spend most of your holidays outdoors, you can head out to the Pirin National Park, which is known for its majestic peaks, sweeping valleys, diverse wildlife and excellent hiking trails. You can also go to the equally spectacular Strandzha National Park or explore the unique Belogradchik rock formations.
Black Sea Coast – The seaside resorts of Bulgaria are popular, too. In fact, many consider them to be the premier Bulgaria attractions, which comes as no surprise since they offer clear waters, white sands and a variety of activities. While the Black Sea Coast of Bulgaria is undoubtedly a must-see region, there are plenty of other interesting places to go to – all of which make Bulgaria a truly great holiday destination.
