World PvP: Dominate with Your Hunter
December 15, 2009
Even if your Hunter has avoided it in the past, Player versus Player (PvP) combat is in their future. Wrath of the Lich King has brought a new emphasis to World PvP. There’s now a real time PvP battle zone called Lake Wintergrasp. There, the emphasis is on real-time World PvP. There players battle on the live server (no instancing) to win points that allow them to buy a wide variety of special items such as the new Heirloom items. These are items that any of the player’s characters in that account regardless of that character’s level can take advantage of.
With Lake Wintergrasp’s high popularity, and the trend toward PvP combat in the gaming industry, you’ll surely see more even more PvP in WoW in the future. Here’s what you need to know to handle your Hunter in this new world:
If you want to be a Hunter in PvP combat, it helps to have the instincts of a hunter. That’s because you’re going to need to be able to identify your prey and understand how it will respond to your attack. You need this knowledge so you can hunt it down and terminate it. You need to understand your own capabilities, your gear, and the tactical situation. Then you need to position yourself and terminate your prey with extreme prejudice before it can take you down. In WoW PvP, it’s much the same, except that your prey is another player’s character instead of an animal.
However, in Hunter PvP combat, there are issues that no real-world hunter has to deal with. You need to know when and how to deploy your Freezing and Frost Traps and essential crowd control devices is necessary but not enough. You also need to know how to manage the space between you and your opponents to cause the most possible DPS damage in each battle. And you must do all this against an intelligent character, rather than a wild animal.
To truly succeed in Hunter PvP combat, you need to understand the behavior of each class of opponent and have a strategy for dealing with them. It’s particularly important to understand how Druids or Warriors or Rogues are likely to approach you. And you need to know how to respond against those classes that can close to hand-to-hand combat range quickly, such as Warriors and Rogues.
You can learn much of what you need to win as a Hunter in PvP simply by spending time in the arena. But I can tell you from personal experience that if you try, you had better be prepared to get crushed and humiliated for a long time. I spent many frustrating hours ranking last or near last in the standings when I tried. Once I started reading a Hunter PvP Guide, I started climbing in the standings rapidly.
Even if you do decide to learn the ins and outs of Hunter PvP combat yourself, you’ll find that a quality PvP Guide will contain strategies and tactics that are not obvious to newer players. It will teach you the most important things to know, saving you vast amounts of time and energy you would otherwise spend learning the secrets of Hunter PvP combat on your own.
