Digital Wedding Photography Tips

March 31, 2008

Even though time moves forward, the images of a couple’s wedding day can be captured forever; professional digital wedding photographers are usually hired to ensure that memories of the day stay captured and ready to be looked at whenever the couple wants too. DVD’s have replaced ‘video’ and digital photography ‘film’ but that does not stop people from enjoying printed still images!

Most wedding photographers have assistants so they can create a wedding album that will be memorable but if you want to take pictures of a friend’s wedding, who will help you? This article highlights a few basic techniques and styles for anyone who wants to capture a friend or family members wedding using a digital camera.

Most importantly try to ensure you don’t have poor background scenery and that there aren’t too many people in the shot. Portrait images (those that show just head and shoulders) can be very effective especially if the background is hardly in the shot.

Although you don’t always think about it at the time, try to ensure those wedding guests wearing spectacles either take them off or provide you with a semi-profile shot. To avoid people in the shot coming out dark when the sunlight is behind them, unless you know what you are doing, move them so the sun is behind you.

Some of the best pictures you will take will be those where the subject(s) do not know the shot is being taken and the best way to do this is by using a zoom lens. You should be alert at all times when shooting digital wedding photography since you can seldom ask people to keep posing for you and the day is also about spontaneity.

Digital cameras rely on two things, memory and power and the last thing you want when you take your shots is to run out of memory or for the batteries to die on you. A one gigabyte card should be the bare minimum you have if your camera is a six mega pixel model, a larger capacity if the camera has a higher mega pixel rating.

High resolution images are generally clearer and have greater color depth but it also means they can be printed out at larger sizes. Storing the wedding images on a computer or CD will mean that you can print them off whenever you want but a presentation CD can be played back on a TV.

If you are interested in digital wedding photography you should enroll in a college and who knows you may find your passion becomes a profession.
