When two people get married whether in a civil ceremony or religious one, it is called a wedding; the attitude of western populations towards marriage has undergone many changes recently. Whatever the background and history to marriage, it is still a legal union between two people; it is not recognized as complete until the marriage license is signed. The man getting married is called the groom or bridegroom to give him his full title and the woman the bride; after the ceremony they are referred to as husband and wife.

Getting Married in a Church

Wedding traditions and customs vary greatly between cultures, ethnic groups, religions, countries, and social classes. Performed by a Christian priest or vicar, the Church ceremony continues to be top of the list as a venue. Of course we all know and love the white wedding but this is not the generally accepted form of ceremony in every Christian country.

Double Weddings

A double marriage is a single ceremony where two couples rendezvous for two separate ceremonies; this type of ceremony is often organized by a person that has a sibling that wants to get married at the same time.

Destination Weddings

You will probably already know of a couple that decided on a destination wedding and asked the guests to travel to where they were staying; the definition of a destination wedding is flexible as you don’t actually have to leave your country for it to qualify, just so it isn’t in your home town.

Themed Weddings

Two day or weekend weddings are a great way to extend the ceremony and festivities as an increasing number of people are finding out. Other occasions come under the term of either themed or special activity which usually takes place over a weekend period. Accommodation for these is normally arranged at the place where the service is going to take place and where the other events are also being held.

Getting Married Online

Although unusual, you can even get married online and it will resemble a normal wedding or you can even have characters of yourselves get married; there are even guides for information on how to go about an internet ceremony with information on people that can carry it out for you. An online wedding also refers to where a couple decides to have their marriage ceremony broadcast live on the internet.

Town Hall Weddings

Elected and appointed officials can carry out a marriage ceremony which is usually called a civil wedding. For people that elect this type of ceremony it is not important to them if God or religion is referred to in such a brief service. Often, this type of service will take place in a judge’s chambers, town or city hall or any other specially designated place.

The information provided here is mainly about weddings and marriage in the Western world primarily based on and around Christian beliefs.
